Description

8 ply - Canadian Maple Longboard Veneer

Decreasing prices:
The more you buy, the less the cost per set. You choose exactly how many boards you want to make.

Our maple is grown in the north, where the very long and very cold winters mean the tress grow very slowly. Tight growth rings mean denser wood veneer.

Maple veneer is always the best choice for making strong skateboards. A SFI-certified mill rotary cuts logs for us, and sorts to our exacting specifications.

Each set of veneer includes:

  • Two cross grain maple sheets called "crossband"at 1/16 '' thickness (1.58 mm)
  • Five long grain maple sheets at 1.16'' thickness (1.58 mm), called "face", "core" or "neutral fiber" depending on their position in the stack of your board.

How to use this product:

Design and build your own custom skateboard using this 1/16 '(1.58mm) thick veneer. This veneer fits perfectly to our vacuum presses (Thin Air Press), which apply uniform pressure across the entire board. By assembling several 1/16 'layers of veneer, you will be able to create radical curves, which will add rigidity to your board.

The classic assembly of a seven ply corresponds to the following stacking:

  1. One face: long grain
  2. One core: long grain
  3. A crossband: cross grain
  4. A core (also called neutral fiber, in the center of the board): long grain
  5. A crossband: cross grain
  6. One core: long grain
  7. One face: long grain

Understanding the veneer:

The top sheet is what we call the “Face” and is intended for the outside layers of your deck. It is cut in the long grain direction. This sheet is virtually knot free and shows hardly any imperfections. This is so that if you intend on leaving the veneer showing, you get the best possible result.

Core – Also long grain direction, this veneer is intended for the inside of the deck as there may be some solid knots, holes, splits, staining or waves. Sometimes we find interesting looking core sheets, so pretty that they look great on the outside of a custom board!

Cross grain – This material is the same as the core but is cut in a cross grain configuration. Normally there are two cross grain layers in a board and is intended to give the board strength across its surface. Sometimes smaller pieces are stitched together in the veneer mill to make up the larger rectangles. This does not hinder board strength.

Note: The inside layers are therefore slightly different.

On the long grain and cross grain sheets, you might spot knots, blemishes, splits, holes, markings or warping. This is because no wood is absolutely perfect, it is a natural material. This is also the industrial norm for skateboard building veneer.

For each sheet to be perfect much of the amazing maple would be wasted, this therefore not being at all ecological. Plus these markings and knots by no means change the quality, strength or suppleness of the veneer, nor the finalised board or project. So let's be eco-friendly, follow the norm and make great quality decks!

Maintenance:

Until they are laminated together, veneer sheets are prone to splitting, especially cross band sheets. Handle them with care.

  • if a sheet is split or broken, not to worry these sheets are entirely useable and will not effect the quality of your board. Simply apply glue to those lines while pressing your board. Once dried, the board will be very strong.
  • if the sheets are warped/wavy (often due to temperature changes during transport), once put under press, these thin and flexible sheets will easily flatten out.
Veneer expands and contracts with moisture. Keep your veneer stored away from all heat sources and lay it flat. Keep all veneer sheets together so that when they acclimatise to the environment, all layers expand or contract the same. If your work area is very dry, keep your unused veneer sealed in plastic until you are ready to use it.
